The installation featured here was a piece that I created for a fellowship competition. This room allowed for the visitor to enter the space alone and follow a path made of spices and tea. The aromas and soft lighting were meant to engage the senses of the visitor and encourage a meaningful experience with the artwork. The specific combination of spices were used for their purported calming and energizing properties.,
In the center, vitrine was placed, holding a chatelaine. The chatelaine acted as a sort of medievil toolkit. My chatelaine for my journey to the labyrinth held a cup, a graphite drawing stick, a scroll of handmade kozo paper, and a meditation focus tool.
What tools would you take on your own spiritual journey? Where would you like to be transported to?
Encouraging inner thought and contemplation is too often ignored in our fast-paced, consumer culture; I wanted to create a piece of work that allowed the visitor to slow down and to just be in an alternate space. The reactions to this piece were very favorable and elicited a range of responses. Installations such as this or using natural outdoor materials can be created in the home or garden as a a commission work.
